Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative

The Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative is a pan-African programme launched in 2007 by the African Union. Its goal is to address land degradation and desertification in the Sahel and Sahara, boost food security, and support communities to adapt to climate change.

The vision of a Great Green Wall across Africa is a metaphor that depicts a mosaic of sustainable land uses and community based land and water management practices.

The Great Green Wall is a game-changer for Africa with the potential to strengen local resilience to climate change, preserve rural heritage and improve the livelihoods of local populations.

The Sahel and West Africa Program (SAWAP) is the World Bank and GEF’s contribution to the Great Green Wall Initiative. SAWAP is  a second generation investment under TerrAfrica with $1 Billion portfolio of 12 discrete country projects in 12 countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali,  Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Togo.

A regional project on “Building Resilience through Innovation, Communication and Knowledge Services” (BRICKS), is a first step toward implementing the emerging Sahel Plan. BRICKS operationalizes the vision of a Knowledge Bank, by networking the 12 country project teams and partners working on the Great Green Wall and by providing opportunities for south-south learning, monitoring and evaluation tools, geospatial services, and portfolio-wide communication.
