March 1-3, 2017
The celebration of Wangari Maathai Day is in recognition of the work and life of the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, who dedicated her life to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in Africa. In January 2012, the African Union (AU) adopted a decision calling for the joint celebrations of the African Environment Day and Wangari Maathai Day. The AU is leading the 2017 celebrations in Nouakchott, Mauritania under the theme “Environmental Protection for Current and Future Generation: Implementation of Agenda 2063″. The theme recognizes the numerous environmental challenges and their impact on the continent, particularly on women. Thus, there will be a two-day Women and Environment Forum on March 1-2 to deliberate on this year’s theme and draft policy recommendations for enhancing women’s roles in ensuring environmental sustainability in Africa. More information about this three-day event running from March 1-3, 2017 can be found here.
